Getting There:
We meet at Lochmaben Castle car park on the shores of Castle Loch 1.5 miles from Lochmaben on the B7020, accessed by a narrow winding road that is potholed in parts. Please take care and keep your speed low. Castle Loch and it’s surroundings are abundant with amazing wildlife; keep your eyes open for feathered and furry friends as you approach.
Parking:
There is a small car park next to the castle which comfortably holds around 8-10 cars. On the approach, you’ll find a small overspill car park that can hold 3-4 vehicles. The grounds are frequented by visitors and dog walkers with the loch being used by anglers; this could minimise the amount of parking space available. If travelling with friends, we advise you to car-share.
Clothing and Footwear:
Depending on our vastly variable weather, the grounds and woodlands can be wet, muddy and potentially slippery at times. Please ensure you’re kitted out with decent footwear such as walking boots, sturdy trainers or Wellingtons. Certain areas are exposed to the elements with minimal shelter available. Bear this in mind before you leave home and if in doubt, bring a light rain jacket and/or umbrella. Winter can be stunning out at Castle Loch with glistening grounds and an eerie nip to the air. Wrap up with plenty of layers; hats, gloves, scarves etc. so you can remain snug as a bug as we chill you to the bone with our stories…
Some of the tour may take place in twilight and full darkness, a fantastic atmosphere creator and ideally, we like to take full advantage of it! However, safety comes first and the team will bring a limited selection of torches to negotiate our guests around uneven or hazardous areas. We encourage you to pack a small pocket torch just in case and mind your footing at all times.
Children:
Young people bring real energy and enthusiasm to any tour and we are keen to encourage an interest in local history. Our suggested age guide is 8 and above - children MUST be accompanied by an adult. The tour primarily features ghosts and dark history stories with time spent in the woodland areas for rod and crystal dowsing, therefore parental discretion is advised when bringing young people along as some may find the content distressing/frightening. Attendance is at the discretion of parents and carers. Please contact us for more information to help make your choice.
When Nature Calls:
Due to the location, there are no toilet facilities, the nearest being in Lochmaben. Make sure you’re well prepared as you may be at the castle for up to two hours.
Mobility:
Due to the uneven terrain, mobility is restricted on this tour and is unsuitable for wheelchair users and people with serious mobility issues. If you’d like to discuss the suitability of this tour in terms of mobility, hearing or vision impairments, please get in touch. Our helpful guides can direct you to a Mostly Ghostly event that best suits your needs. Guide dogs are welcome.
