Picture this: an enigmatic, crumbling ruin, lush inviting woodlands, a vibrant haven filled with the buzz of wildlife - sounds pretty idyllic - but there are two sides to every coin… Discover the dark character of this ancient stronghold with Legends & Lore at Castle Loch!
Such was the overwhelming success of our opening night for Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival back in 2014, this thrilling tour has been a regular feature in our Mostly Ghostly events calendar. Showcasing our magnificent region, especially it’s rich tapestry of history, ghost stories and legends is a huge team priority and what a fantastic location in which to do so! Within this darkly dramatic setting, we aim to give guests an unforgettable experience.
The history of this now ruinous fortress is soaked in the battle-spilt blood from centuries of unrest, the perfect recipe for a haunting or two. Eye-witness accounts of strange and disturbing presences are abound with whispered rumours that local folk don’t like to wander up there after nightfall. Don’t be fooled by it’s picturesque loch and leafy glades, though beautiful, these areas have witnessed much darkness and are said to conceal a hooded, vampire-like creature who stalks the undergrowth, cowering under cover of darkness, waiting for it’s next victim… A vampire, surely creatures of myth and legend confined to the lore of Eastern Europe - or so you might think. However you will learn of the origins of Lochmaben’s own Nosferatu legend and how in recent years, it was catapulted into the media spotlight!
Add to this chilling concoction, a fearsome curse that haunted the powerful Bruce clan, a collection of spooky tales from nearby areas and a host of curious experiences encountered by our very own team and you’re in for a terrifying treat! To top off your enchanting evening, we’ll invite guests to try their hand at rod and crystal dowsing in the shadows of a haunting woodland copse; what might you discover?
Please note: This tour takes place in the paths and grounds bordering the castle - we do not enter the castle itself
