A Haunting in Dumfries…

She spotted a dark haired lady on the landing just below the middle floor... This week's spooky spotlight shines on a haunted building in Dumfries, where Mostly Ghostly conducted a most intriguing paranormal investigation - enjoy! As you’re walking around Dumfries Town Centre, take a moment to consider the old and interesting buildings you pass on a daily basis; many now used for homes or workplaces, hives of activity where people spend their days and nights, perhaps never really knowing the history of the location or the names of those who lived and died there. Add to that, the possibility...

Return to Carnsalloch Part III

It was said an animal had been responsible for his death... It was the 21st December 2012 and we had returned to James’ place following our ‘Doomsday in Dumfries’ Ghost Walk. After a bit of time relaxing and reflecting over the tour, we began talking about our old haunt Carnsalloch House, wondering if it might be possible to make contact with anyone linked to the property. Some readers will be familiar with the spirit called Albert Johnstone who we first came into contact with on the Garlieston Straight Road. The reason I mention Albert is to give an example of how communication is not always...

Murder In Moffat!

The package, which lay in a remote and deep ravine, appeared to contain a human arm... It was a grim Sunday morning in April and as I looked out of the curtains, the sight of heavy rain bursting from the drab grey sky made me want to slink back under the bedclothes. However, the weather was going to improve and more importantly, I had other plans, a date with murder to be precise - that is, Murder in Moffat! The organisers of this exciting two-day crime fiction festival – Moffat Book Events – had planned a stimulating programme appealing to both enthusiasts of the genre and emerging writers...

Ghostly Garlieston

a second incident occurred which was to prove far more disturbing... On the 8th March, we travelled to Wigtownshire to give a talk on ghosts and superstitions at the John McNeillie Library. Following this highly successful and enjoyable event, we decided to make the most of our visit by conducting an investigation of the Garlieston Straight Road, a thoroughfare well known for its spirit activity in the Haunted Machars and beyond... As is often the case, many feelings and 'impressions' were expressed through John. On this occasion, we had no contact with the spirit we believe to be Albert...

Frightfully Good Feedback!

"Interesting, intriguing, curious..." As part of Local History Week, Mostly Ghostly Investigations were invited to give talks on the subject of ghosts and superstitions at Georgetown Library in Dumfries and John McNeillie Library in Wigtown. With a region so rich in local legends and supernatural tales combined with a variety of personal experiences from our paranormal investigations in Dumfries and Galloway, it was pretty tricky to decide what to include, or rather, what to leave out! We introduced the event with some of the better known customs, stories we've all come across at one time...

Return to Carnsalloch Part II

He could see a horse standing tethered about two feet in front of the car... Welcome to part two of our ‘Return to Carnsalloch’ blog series which focuses on a number of recent visits to Carnsalloch House, a very eerie derelict mansion situated near Kirkton village. Last time, we left you at the point where John had just returned to the car and in his mind’s eye could ‘see’ a man standing at the top of the staircase… John gave a good description of the gentleman; he wore a shirt and waistcoat and had a round face with just a touch of grey hair remaining. He didn’t seem to be aware...

"It was one of those super-frustrating, give your hair a good tug moments..." Hello everyone and welcome to our latest blog – a short but VERY important update! Last week, just by chance, luck, fate, whatever you want to call it, I discovered the messages being sent through our online contact form were going to the wrong e-mail address! Yes folks, the difference between .com and .co.uk cannot be underestimated! It was one of those super-frustrating, give your hair a good tug moments; the good news is, this has only been the case since our site was re-vamped in early January. With a quick...

Shadowy Sightings!

Posted by: kathleen    Tags:      Posted date:  March 7, 2013  |  No comment

"it was totally black, as if it just swallowed the light from my torch..." Shadow People - the very name conjures up eerie images of dark, unsettling figures lurking in the shadows, there one second, gone the next, elusive, even dangerous but who or what are these dark, often featureless entities reported from all over the world? They are characterised by a dark, shadowy appearance, often tall, with a human shape or outline and due to the high speeds at which they move, can be difficult to describe. They are frequently seen out the corner of the eye and are viewed by some as negative energies that...

Tower of Terror Part IV

Posted by: kathleen    Tags:      Posted date:  February 28, 2013  |  No comment

Welcome to the final part of our series featuring one of Scotland's most haunted locations - Pittenweem Tollbooth Tower... The next morning, we awoke in good spirits, if a little shaken by the night’s experiences. We were up and packed in good time, ready to make our final visit to Pittenweem Clock Tower before driving back to Dumfries. It was a fine start to the day and we felt lifted - and a little more secure - in the light of the morning sun. We re-entered the very door we’d been so keen to exit just 12 hours earlier and climbed the beautiful spiral staircase to the first floor. The camcorder...

“My heart was racing as I fully expected two people to come running out of the front door...” There are many enigmatic locations in Dumfries & Galloway, some that we find ourselves continually drawn back to. Carnsalloch House is one of those places. By now, many of our regular web visitors will be aware of the team’s fascination with this creepy old ruin and the range of ghostly stories connected with it. As part of our ongoing research into the history and hauntings of Carnsalloch, we tend to visit every few weeks and spend time inviting communication. John, who is perhaps one of the more...
