The Dumfries & Galloway Life People of the Year Awards is a red letter event in the local calendar; a glittering occasion where guests get glammed up, enjoy mouth-watering fine dining and share in the joy of their friends and colleagues during the moving awards ceremony. Traditionally, guests are piped in as they arrive on the steps of Easterbrook Hall, a hearty Scots greeting that makes you glow with pride. Once you set foot inside the impressive Hall, you’ll be assured a warm welcome with a friendly smile and sparkling glass of Bucks Fizz. The DGLife Team pull out all the stops to ensure you’re experience is unforgettable, something you’ll always cherish…
As our car drew up at the Crichton Estate, fond memories came flooding back from 2012, when we scooped the esteemed title of Tourism Champion, a humbling and fulfilling moment. Two years on and we found ourselves shortlisted in the same category, a true honour in itself. Joining us, were the Chairperson of the Mull of Galloway Trust, Maureen Chand and outstanding local artist, Julie Dumbarton. We were in fantastic company and could hardly believe we’d reached this point for a second time. We found ourselves sitting with the cheery Mull of Galloway team and had a grand old chat about our respective projects – a visit to this stunning attraction is a Mostly must-do!
Lunch followed and what a lunch it was! Scrummy Lockerbie cheese tartlets, tender Criffel beef and divine raspberry shortbread gateaux – what could be better! It was pretty awesome watching the Easterbrook staff deliver plateful upon plateful to the tables in such an efficient manner, they did a cracking job! Feeling full and content, we sat back with our awards programmes to look at the nominees before the awards were officially ushered in by Writer and Commissioning Editor, Andrea Thompson, who has worked tirelessly to promote our glorious region. Dame Barbara Kelly joined her and acknowledged the wealth of talent in the room. A round of applause erupted and Awards Presenter, Gilly Fraser, was welcomed to the stage; Gilly brings such warmth and professionalism to the role, her passion shines through and it was lovely to see her back up there.
The thrill of anticipation swirled round the room as guests hung on every word of Gilly’s opening comments. We didn’t wait long before the tourism category came up and that dream-like quality which had characterised our 2012 experience kicked in. The nerves were brief but intense and our hearts thumped audibly as she came round to announcing the winners. What really touched us was Gilly’s descripton of the team, the essence being that we balance the dark and spooky side with being incredibly nice folk – thank you Gilly, that meant a lot!
We almost jumped out of our seats with joy as Mostly Ghostly Investigations were announced Tourism Champion winners 2014! Collecting the beautiful glass award had a magical feel and we were touched by the beaming faces and good wishes as we returned to our seats. The rest of the event followed suit and although individual achievements were marked, it felt very much like a collective celebration, brimming with positivity. We listened to stories of talented people and innovative projects, selfless dedication and ingenuity. Sitting together, we felt proud to share the room with some of D&G’s finest ambassadors, people of all ages, backgrounds and skills – incredible!
Hands clapped, smiles lit up and tissues dabbed happy tears away. The ceremony closed with an evocative performance of Auld Lang Syne by Person of the Year, Robyn Stapleton before everyone said their goodbyes. Guests slowly filtered out and even when the room was almost empty, the charged atmosphere remained. We headed home to talk, reflect and look forward – did we ever envisage moments like this when Mostly Ghostly launched? Not in our wildest dreams!
Congratualations to all the nominees, winners and specially commended guests for their fabulous achievements – well done!
Also, huge congratulations to our dear friend, Andrea Thompson, for being recognised at the 2014 Scottish Media Awards as “Editor of the Year” – well deserved is an understatement!
